Aroostook county's snowmobile clubs have grown stronger and more active than ever this year. Memberships have grown, clubs have united, and new groomers have been purchased. Some clubs are recovering from a lackluster past while other newly formed groups look to the future.
These clubs maintain what is rated as the best snowmobile trail system in New England. Through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers, several miles will be added to an already extensive Northern Maine trial system this year.
Many of these clubs began preparing for winter events early in the fall. The activities are, almost without exception, family oriented. Visitors to the County are encouraged to join a club and attend club-sponsored events. The following is a list of clubs and scheduled happenings that will get you out and about this winter! Clubs are listed from south to north:
The Big Valley S. C. has a clubhouse located on snowmobile Route 60 in Island Falls. It has 65 members and grooms 100 miles of trails.
Linneus Sno-Sports, Inc. has a clubhouse in Linneus. Last year the club had 189 family memberships and eight business memberships. It groomed 125 miles of trail.
The Meduxnekeag Ramblers have a clubhouse in Littleton on ITS 86. Last year it had 250 memberships and groomed about 108 miles of trail.
The Central Aroostook S. C. has a clubhouse in Mars Hill off ITS 81. Last year they had 135 memberships and groomed 70 miles of trail. This year they will be maintaining trail with a new groomer.
The Ashland S. C. meets at the V.F.W. in Ashland. Last year it has 108 memberships and groomed 44 miles of trail. The club will be maintaining trail with a new groomer this year.
The Presque Isle S. C. was the largest in the state of Maine last year at 400 memberships. It has a clubhouse located in Presque Isle on ITS 83.
The Aroostook River S. C. has a clubhouse in Castle Hill off ITS 83. It has 110 memberships and grooms 38 miles of trail.
The Walker Siding S. C. has a clubhouse at Squa Pan Lake off Trail 75. Last year the club had 92 memberships. It will add a new trail over Squa Pan Mountain this year that will be about 7 miles long, raising its total miles of groomed trail to 50.
The Easton Trailblazers had 40 memberships last year. They meet in the Oddfellows Hall in Easton.
The Washburn Trail runners had 70 memberships and groomed 40 miles of trail last year.
The Fort Fairfield S. C. has a clubhouse on the Strickland Road in Fort Fairfield, which was built last year. Memberships grew by 60, raising total memberships to 150.
The Limestone S. C. clubhouse is located on the Albert Road in Limestone.
The Portage Lakers S. C. meets in the municipal building in Portage. It has about 108 members and grooms approximately 60 miles of trail.
The Caribou Snowmobile Club was created from the union of the Snodrifters, the Unisleds, the Connor Cruisers and the Spruce Haven S. C. Last year these four clubs had a combined membership of over 250 families and groomed over 80 miles of trail, signing an additional 20.
The Nordic Lakers, Inc. has 150 memberships and four business members. They not only groom 29 miles of snowmobile trails but also maintain 5 miles of ski trail at Madawaska Lake. The club meets at the Stockholm Legion in Stockholm.
The Moosetwon Riders S. C. in Allagash has a clubhouse about half a mile above the confluence of the Allagash and St. John rivers. It can be reached on snowmobile via ITS 92. The club has 95 family and 10 business memberships. It grooms 55 miles of trail.
The cold Mountain S. C. in Grand Isle had 45 memberships last year. They met in the St. Gerard Mount Carmel Church in Grand Isle. The club grooms about 120 miles to connect clubs in Madawaska, Van Buren and Long Lake.
The Frenchville S. C. had 165 memberships last year and groomed about 50 miles of trail. Their clubhouse is located in between Frenchville and upper Frenchville about one mile up the Paradis Road off U.S. Route 1.
The Carter Brook Sno-Birds, who have a clubhouse located 12 miles from Fort Kent on Route 85, have 150 memberships.
The Valley Sno-Riders of Fort Kent had 185 memberships last year and groomed about 30 miles of trail.
The Twin Lakes S.C. meets at Gil Guerette's Country Snowmobile Lounge at Black Lake. Created this year, the club has 100 memberships and grooms 23 miles of trail, which club members say will make it easier to travel from Caribou to Fort Kent.
The Gateway S.C. in Van Buren has more than 100 memberships and grooms about 10 miles of trail.
The Sno Angels S.C. of St. Francis has a clubhouse located a mile-and-a-half north of St. Charles Catholic Church in St. Francis on Route 161. The club has 137 members and grooms 60 miles of trail. The club maintains a warm-up shack (dubbed "the love shack") on ITS 92 half way between Allagash and St. Francis.
